 Even before Kamal’s tweets started making headlines, the star has always been prone to controversies. Vocal about several issues, Kamal Haasan isn’t the conventional star who believes in maintaining an image. On several instances, his films have had story themes that were found to be controversial; let it be religion or caste. Here are five projects of Kamal Haasan than ran into several issues before their release.
Hey Ram
This national-award winning could easily termed as one of Kamal’s most ambitious projects. A film that was a fictional take on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and the event that led to the same, the movie faced the ire of several outfits who felt that the film showed Gandhi in bad light. However, the controversies did not affect the film’s credibility or the acclaim it received. Hey Ram went to win three National awards and was also the official entry for the Academy Awards that year.
Virumaandi
Another directorial venture of Kamal Haasan, the film was initially titled Sandiyar. A political outfit found the title derogatory and insisted that it would induce caste based violence. Since, shooting was interrupted, Kamal was forced to change the title to Virumaandi. The film was a huge hit and won immense critical acclaim, also earning a cult status.
Manmadhan Anbu
A self-proclaimed atheist, Kamal Haasan is quite open about his religious choices. A poem penned by the Ulaganayagan brought him trouble this time. The lyrics of the poem which had references to Hindu deities were found controversial and hence were demanded to be removed from the movie. The song was eventually removed from the film inorder to enable its release.
Vishwaroopam
Vishwaroopam had faced a 15-day ban thanks to protests. Saying that the film portrayed Muslims in a bad light, several parties asked for the film to be banned. The actor had to go to the Supreme Court to get the film released in the state. There was also controversy as the film was initially planned to be released directly on DTH. However due to pressure from theater owners, the film had a conventional theatrical release.
Bigg Boss Tamil
When there was a lot of speculation about his next project, Kamal Haasan made a surprising debut on Television with Bigg Boss Tamil. Cases were booked against Kamal, the channel and a few contestants on the show for alleged inappropriate content.
