Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar’s Shubh Mangal Savdhan to deal with erectile dysfunction

Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar's Shubh Mangal Savdhan is reportedly a remake of Kalyana Samayal Saadham, that starred Prasanna and Lekha Washington.

Earlier we had reported about how Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar are coming back together for the third time (second time, if Manmarziyan is shelved) in Aanand L Rai’s production, Shubh Mangal SavdhanThe movie is directed by Tamil director RS Prasanna. Now, as per a report in Mid-Day we have learnt that the movie will be a remake of the director’s Tamil movie, and it will be dealing with the less talked about sensitive issue that every male is secretly scared of – erectile dysfunction.

If there are any Tamil readers out there, you would be very familiar with the movie Kalyana
Samayal Saadham, that starred Prasanna and Lekha Washington. The movie was about a couple who meet through an arranged marriage alliance, fall in love but a few days before the marriage, the groom finds out that he suffers from erectile dysfunction. How he and the girl deals with the issue as well as the pressures of marriage is what the rest of the romcom was all about. At the time of the release, the movie was considered very bold for its subject, as erectile dysfunction is a subject so rarely and seriously  discussed in Indian cinema, other than making crass jokes about its (See Freaky Ali for that!). And yet the movie was a surprise hit of the year.
Here’s the trailer of the movie…

As per the same report in Mid-Day, when Ayushmann was asked about this, he replied “Let’s not call it a remake. It is the rebirth of the same story but the milieu and humour is different. It’s amended to suit Bollywood. Moreover, I am glad to feature alongside Bhumi. My wife saw one of our pictures from a photoshoot and said, ‘It looks like you are hugging me and smiling.’ We are buddies and our chemistry is effortless.” From a man who had the most healthy sperms in his debut Vicky Donor to this, we can say what a role reversal for the talented actor.
Even Bhumi is excited about working on this film with Ayushmann as she spoke to Mid-Day, “There is no fun in doing a run-of-the-mill love story. If films have the ability to change orthodox mindsets, they why not encourage them. This is wacky. We play a couple who are deeply in love but there is a twist in the tale. Sex is still a taboo here but it’s changing. After all, this is the land of Kamasutra.”
Interestingly, Imran Khan was earlier attached to play the lead in the Bollywood remake of the movie, before the plan was dropped.
